Any glowstringers/poi artists here or know any good tips? I recently saw a girl doing what i think was poi (but without the fire) and it really inspired me to try it or something similar. I looked at several tutorial vids on the net and im teaching myself but i'd love any extra tips/good sites. Thanks!

have you heard of glowsticking? its popular on the dance scene, people get two glowsticks and make a really complex, fabulous dance up using them around their torso.....if you look at www.glowsticking.com they have a lot more info, but what i'm trying to learn is glowstringing; it's kind of the same but with teh glosticks on shoelaces. It apparently takes ages to master, so i'm going to be busy! I have a couple of tutorial vids atm but progress is slow. If i get any better i'll post some pics on the net and link. (if you're interested).

excuse me?

i'm just asking a question, i don't think it warranted a reply like that.

hey,

yep glowstringing and poi are pretty similar - best sites are www.spherculism.com (tho this is down at the mo), www.homeofpoi.com, www.poiinthepark.com. they have good forums so you can meet others in your area. learning poi is like learning music - you need patience and practice - but it's great fun with limitless possibilities. try the homeofpoi tutorials to start with..

good luck!

just read your question again - see you've find the sites.. re: extra tips... everyone has different ways of teaching poi, best demonstrated person to person... most people use the cube idea (ie imagine you're in a cube, every side of which is a plain you can spin the poi in).. others suggest you think of the poi being on rails, so that when you come to turning, you just think of taking the poi 'off their rails' then putting them back blah blah... thing is, if you're gunna be teaching yourself (as i did) your best bet are video tutorials. even then these can be quite unclear when you get to some 5bt moves and the like.. TOP TIP: practice, practice, practice - poi is about 'muscle memory' or 'move imprinting' or whatevr you want to call it. whatever the move, even if it's just spinning the poi at your sides, you need to get your body absolutely used to the feeling of poi, such that you can do everything with your eys closed if need be.. like music, you can only get good if you practice.. drunk guys often see you doing firepoi and think it must be well easy so have a go and ending burning their face off.. it's quite funny..

thanks a lot, very helpful! I'm struggling a little with the glowstringing because i think the weight is wrong, i think i might buy the poi off the homeofpoi site and learn it with those instead. Then i can attempt it with glowsticks and fire and all the flashy stuff.

you say you taught yourself? that's fabulous, what did you use? (eg. did you make them yourself or buy them?)

thanks again!

Glowstringing is an art that most likely originated from the dance of poi. It is an entertainment than can be found at parties, raves, and just entertaining guests or friends. It's a very fun hobby and if you are someone who is fascinated with coordinating your body in different ways, its a hobby for you.

If you'd like to know more you can check out my website at www.GenXGlow.com - where I've dedicated my time to teaching others who want to learn, how to glowstring. You will also find an awesome community of people who enjoy the same things.
