You can get birth marriage and death certs from the General Register Office atg www.gro.gov.uk. If you supply the GRO reference they will cost 7.

To find the GRO reference number, you need to look at the indexes which are currently free on www.ancestry.co.uk or there is also www.freebmd.org.uk but this only goes upto about 1910.

Once you have found a relative that would have been alive in 1901, you can start using the censuses to look for them. Ancestry has all censuses from 1851-1901 but you have to pay a subscription (well worth it). the 1901 census can be found atwww.1901censusonline.com but you have to pay to view and the 1881 census is free at www.familysearch.org.

You will probably come across alot of websites that are pay per view, you can usually buy a5 worth of credits at a tim - the hobby is not cheap but very addictive!

This is a useful site http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/

As well as links to the best known genealogy sites, you'll find all sorts of 'How to...' articles.

Usually the easiest place to start is with relatives. They usually have a lot of information and photographs (which you can always copy) and sometimes they have certificates aswell. This should give you a good starting point. My Auntie has been so helpful with my family tree. The best place to get birth/mariage/death certificates is from the registry office of the relevant area (ie if you live in London but your ancestor was born in Manchester you need to contact the Manchester registry office) as it is much cheaper (and quicker) than using the central office. There are some good books on the market now (you can always get one from your local library) and there are some monthly magazines on the subject which can be very informative. Good Luck!!!!!
