I can only think that the disc laser is dirty/misaligned/broken. The laser needs to work much harder and with more accuracy to read a DVD than it does to read a CD. Start with a lens cleaning and if this does not help then I would think about replacement as repairs are often just as expensive as a new PS2 is these days.

cheers furrycheeks.

have tried a liquid laser cleanier and that did no good. we got the ps2 (small black one) now and was hoping someone could advise !

thanks again...

a side effect of chipping is loss of dvd playback
you should be able to find a shop usually a games shop that sells ps2 games that will repair it,it will probably cost you about 30 to fix

this happened to my sons ps2. It is because the laser needs realigning. It affects certain discs but not all of them hence you can still play some.

If you trawl through google under aligning laser ps2 you will before long find out how to do it - I did it about a year ago and remember opening up the box and slowly rotating a small white cog but cant remember the exact details! good luck and if I can do it I am sure you can!
