DVDs come in two main formats + (plus) and minus (-). There is also RAM but you can probably ignore this.
DVD + (plus) and - (minus) are very similar, but not exactly the same.
So we have DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW.
MOST (but not all) devices can record in DVD+ or DVD-, and play DVD+ and DVD-.
But some DVD recorders for example can only record in DVD+ OR DVD- (but not both)
So if you look at this DVD recorder, it can PLAY all DVD types, but not RECORD all DVD types.

And if you thought this was complicated wait until the NEXT generation come along this year because we have two formats again - Blu-Ray and HD-DVD so let battle commence.
