Your
stomach actually rumbles all the time - not just when it's empty. The technical name for stomach rumbles is borborygmi. Borborygmi is caused by gas. Air gets swallowed along with food and when our stomach contracts it pushes the gas around making the noise we can hear. Loud borborygmi results from the strong stomach contractions that occur when we are hungry or nervous.
