how does company car tax work for the self employed(i.e the financial arrangements)-is it more advantageous than an employer provided company car?

Yes, for the self-employed, a car can be considered a business expense, whereas for a company employee, it's a benefit in kind.
you have to be clear about what are business miles and what are not on your return.
