how many helicopters are there in service (i use this term losely as many may be mothballed in hangers) with the three armed forces of the uk?

The RAF currently has 111 active service (not training) and 42 training and OCU helicopters. It is difficult to find this info for the Navy and Army as the websites dont list this info.

The Army have tons of helicopters, mostly Lynx AH.7 and AH.9 and some Apache AH.1.

The Navy's Fleet Air Arm has a whole bunch too.

1 squadron of Seaking HC.5 (771 Naval Air Sqn)

3 squadrons of Seaking HU.4 (845, 846 & 848)

1 squadron of Seaking ASaC.7 (849)

5 squadrons of Merlin HM.1 (700, 814, 820, 824 & 829)

1 squadron of Lynx AH.7 (847)

2 squadrons of Lynx HAS.3 and HMA.8 (702 & 815)

These squadrons are known as the operational fleet. There are also a number of helicopters in the sustainment fleet (those that are undergoing deep maintenance, are static displays, or are used for ground training).

Incidentley, 815 Naval Air Squadron is the largest helicopter squadron in the world, with over 30 aircraft.
