Anyone ever heard of anyone ever winning one of those readers digest competitions? The ones where if you take out a subscription you "could win 100K". Is there any checking that someone wins? Or is it all bull? surely they are a high profile company someone somewhere would be checking.

An ex-colleague of mine won about 12 years ago.
I'm sure if you contact them, they are obliged to provide winners details (unless they have asked for their name to be witheld).
I seem to remember their being a short program about a waste paper bin winning the jackpot a few years ago...

It's basically a numbers game the know they will get 100,000 mugs to sign up to the magazine at 50 a pop so they can pocket the difference.

Thanks for the answers.

I understand why they do it I just wondered if anyone actaully won. Ethel, was that the top prize?

frankly, whoever would want to pollute their house with the readers digest beats me
A few years ago a Scottish guy won 100,000. It made the news because he sent in the NO envelope...it is drawn by independent adjudicaters.......so wether you order or not, you stand equal chances of being drawn

I think it's one of the more honest 'competitions', but I don't believe the odds of winning justify even a second class stamp.

They recoup the cost of it by overpricing the magazine or books.

Sorry Loosehead

Yes, it was the top prize that my colleague won. He was as surprised as anybody else I think - he didn't really have any expectations of winning.

Yes, I received a cheque for 10 out of the blue many years ago.
I think it's funny how every year they send me loads and loads of bumpf about their "98th Grand prize Draw" - It's always the 98th!! I know this because I had a big clear out at home and found loads of them from different years! That's why I've never bothered entering - it made me think it was all a con. I'm quite suprised to read that there have actually been bona fide winners.
