Why can feedback be set to private? It's the main way to determine whether somebody is a good or bay ebayer. Seems a stupid idea to me!

It is understandable if the feedback relates to personal items such as incontinence pads.

Sometimes it is done as a temporary measure whilst ebay investigate complaints of bad feedback from a spite bidder -someone who bid deliberately with no intention of paying, so they could leave bad feedback.

Buyers may make their feedback private if they have bought a surprise gift.

I very rarely bid on items where the feedback is private.

i would say its a good idea - it tells you instantly that this person isn't trustworthy without having to wade through loads of tedious feedback
the feedback doesn't state what the items are so are so it wouldn't matter it they were incontinence pants - unless someone clicked on the item number - but why would anyone do that?
It is important to check what the feedback is for joko.

It is too easy to build up a very high feedback score buying/selling 1p ebooks for example.

You want to be sure that the feedback is for genuine transactions - and looking at the items is a good indication.
It always makes me a little suspicious.

never really thought about it like that ethel, it would take too long to wade through.

if i was selling something embarrassing to customers i don't think i would go private just to save their blushes as it gives out negative vibes to buyers as they won't be aware of your reasons and will just assume you have got too many negatives and don't want others to see.

mmmm....its a bit of touugh one - get more buyers because you spare their blushes but get less trust and therefore less buyers in return...catch 22, eh?

mind you, would that mean any feedback you left would not be visible too, because surely thats where the buyers would like to be most hidden in case their family looked at it?

If you go to http://www.goofbay.co.uk/ebay_tools you will be able to see the feedback, even if the person has made it private. It's a little slow though.

Thanks for all your answers guys and that site is quite useful cheers donnac77.

people who have their feedback set too private have something to hide. I bought a fake off someone, and after my complaint he instantly set his feedback to private. I wished i'd checked his mutal feedback's as these were all negative speaking. It cost me 7 to send the fake back. Also be carefull and check all the feedbacks, as many are sometimes fake as well, esp from china, africa, holland and ireland. you can genarlly tell when they are all from the same area, or all from people with less than 10, or "no longer registered users" Take care and be carefull.
