Diamond tester

Has anyone heard of a machine, with pencil-like attachment, which when put on to a real diamond makes a buzzing sound, but if the stone is not diamond - no sound? If so, what is it called please?

As far as I know it's just called a diamond tester ...

I thought they used heat-displacement to test gems? ...

Electronic diamond testers work by measuring the loss of heat from a metallic probe. Diamonds are excellent conductors of heat and will draw the heat from the probe faster than simulants.


(I assume they would sound an alarm ...your buzzing sound ... one way or the other?)

Thanks naz for explanation , I had never seen one of these machines until yesterday, and didnt know how it worked.
