Tail of Planes-Boeing 737-800

When on one of these aircraft recently i saw a hole or a nozzle that looked like a sized down back of a jet engine at the back of the tail.Can anyone tell me what this is ?

It's an APU (Auxilliary Power Unit). Power for the aircraft while main engines are not running is supplied from a generator driven by this unit. Once main engines are running, it can be shut down, and normally remains so during the flight. With some aircraft, it can be started while the aircraft is in flight so as to supply electrical power should the main engine power fail. With other aircraft... oops!

An APU, as heathfield states does provide electricity but also provides compressed air for the heating/cooling of the aircraft while on the ground, if required. It also provides compressed air to start the main engines. Although one generator can provide all the required electric current, in the event of an engine failure, the APU can be started to assure a backup generator. However, if the aircraft has been at cruise altitudes for some time, the starting of the APU is not a sure thing because of becoming cold soaked...
