It says on DVD adverts that the sound is incredible, mind-blowing, etc, but on some or most DVD's I play I sometimes have to turn the volume all the way up just to hear it. Is it my TV, or have others experienced this?

I get that too. I have my TV sound through the DVD player and that's as loud as you like (set on around -44db) but when I put a DVD on I have to whack it up (to about -20db).
You get what you pay for! I paid about 400 for a DVD player with surround sound 300 watts, 5 speakers and sub woofer, upgraded all the speaker wires and scart leads. The sound is incredible, better than the cinema all at 50% volume.
With my tv I have to set the volume on each channel.
Only when first setting it up, obviously.

Perhaps you need to go into your settings and adjust the volume for your DVD channel.
watching movies with 5.1 digi surround is great !
