Stench Pipes

Someone i know has recently had new upvc gutters etc. They have left the stench pipe just straight and the top of it below the level of the guttering, instead of cranking it round the gutters. They say this is the modern way is this correct?

You 'could' end up with the smell in the attic ... get the lazy bar-stewards to do it properly.

No, its nonsense. The pipe must extend above the line of the guttering by a minimum distance to satisfy the Hygiene part of Building Regs. From memory the minimum distance is 300mm above (assuming you have no dormer windows sticking out of the roofspace - otherwise it has to go above them).

"(Soil) ventilating pipes open to the outside air should finish at least 900mm above any opening into a building within 3 metres ..." England & Wales Building Regs, Part H, para 1.31. That's the correct answer for you.
