Freeview Box.. Plse help

Have had a freeview box for a few years now and have been running it prefectly well on a TV with one scart socket. Had the normal aireal plugged into the freeview and the scart into the DVD player. Have just bought a new freeview box and it does not work without the scart being plugged into it. If i got a scart splitter for the tv, will I be able to record the freeview channels and watch a dvd at the same time?
