When my son switches on his T.V. he gets 3 thin coloured lines at the bottom of the screen. These soon disappear and the screen remains blank. Is this almost certainly the tube expiring or could there be an alternative explanation? It is quite old and not digital. Thanks for any help.

it sounds to me that the tube is nearing the end of its life, it is sometimes cheeper to get a new set rather than replacing the tube and paying for somebody to to this
I would say it is the tube.

Cheaper to buy a new tv.
If the tube is producing the three colours, red, green & blue, it is likely OK. The electron beams for illuminating each colour are scanned left to right across the screen repeatedly while being deflected from top to bottom many times per second by a varying magnetic field produced by a yoke mounted around the neck of the tube between the screen and the electron "guns" positioned inside. There may be a problem with the vertical deflection circuits; could be something as simple as a bad connection or a fairly inexpensive part gone bad.

Request an estimate and establish a maximum price for the repair with consideration of the value of the set and replacement costs.

The prices of newer T.V.'s are very competitive and digital sets are also coming down. This might be a good time to consider an upgrade.

Thanks to all three of you!
Ithink it may be a bad connection because VERY occasionally it will come on as normal [usually when Gareth has thumped it !]
However it is quite old so we will consider replacing it.
Thanks again for your advice.
