Assuming that you want brand new and not second hand this site is as good a place to start as any:

http://www.totaldigital.biz/default.php

However you do not say whether you want LCD/Plasma or CRT. If you want CRT(although I am not sure there is such a thing as40" TV in this) you will find them relatively cheap because it is becoming outdated technology. Similarly and to the best of my knowledge 40" in LCD/Plasma is not the most common size.

However where you are most likely to get a good deal is to buy/look for a non HD ready TV. This is not because they are not any good it is just that HD Ready is the latest craze.

I recently opted for a Panasonic 37" Plasma(non HD Ready) and not only does it look great on the wall but quite honestly with digital reception the picture is fantastic.

Hope this gives you a good start.

parks where did you get yours from and how much cheers
Well it is a sort of long story. I originally had decided that I was going to buy a 37"HD Ready LCD. After much research I got it down to a coice of 2. However one day earlier this year I was in Exeter and they had a sale in the Panasonic shop so I browsed. What they had was the TH37 model(non HD Ready) with DVDRecorder plus wall bracket and a 5 YEAR GUARANTEE on the TV. Total cost 1200ish.
I did a quick think about whether HD was a necessity and decided that just like we all have very old CRT TVs so there were millions of non-HD ready plasmas/LCDs in existence so they were hardly likely to be out-of-date for many years yet. I condider that getting a 5 year guarantee was the most important part and it was that primarily that that persuaded me. So you see not only did I not get LCD but didn't get HD Ready either.
Normally I would only use a franchise like a Panasonic Shop as a reference for models cos they rarely have the best prices but because the tendency is to push HD TVs there are many bargains to be had out there.
My advice is to check exactly what size you want and this in part will decide whether you purchase Plasma or LCD.
I can give you more sites to look at a little later. Anything else-please ask
Also, if you look at Ethels answer in the question following yours(HD Television) you will see that there is another reason for not rushing to buy HD Ready.
I bought a new 42" Toshiba from www.beyondtelevision.co.uk/index.asp last month and they were excellent, a great price, stock shown in stock online and they shipped really quickly. I'd certainly use them again and I dont work for them (scouts honour !).
I noticed that Aldi are about to start selling a 40" LCD set for 850. http://www.aldi-stores.co.uk/
3 year warranty as well.
