Setting up new dvd recorder

I've set up my new dvd recorder with my TV and freeview box and everything seems ok, but to operate the dvd recorder you have to do it through a menu screen on the tv. In the manual it says to 'change the input switch on the tv so that the signal comes from the dvd recorder'. The problem is there is no switch and I do not have a remote control for the tv either so how can I get the tv to display the menu screen from the dvd recorder? I've tried having the freeviw box on and off, and have tried scrolling through the channels using the buttons on the actual tv to see if one channel is coming from the dvd recorder but it hasn't worked....?

what make is your recorder?
Have you set it up using the Scart leads or have you set it up using co-axial (aerial) wire ?

I assume you have tuned the TV into the signal from the Freeview box as you say all is well in that dept.

If the former - then you will struggle (unless you can scroll down the channels and find an AV input) to view the recorder through the TV. You may have a button somewhere on the TV to select the AV input - then you will be able to see the picture. If you had a remote then it would be simple to select the AV input.

If you have connected using the latter - the co-ax - then you need to tune your TV into the picture from the DVD recorder. This is simple. Place a DVD that you know in the recorder and press play. Tune your TV until you see the picture. Press STOP and you will be on the DVD Recorders screen. Press Menu on the DVD recorder you should see the menu screen and follow the channel set-up to tune in the DVD recorder.

It does not matter if you have your free view on or off in order to see the picture from your DVD recorder.

However in order to record from the free view and then watch through the TV you need to connect the:

The aerial lead into the INPUT of the Freeview box. Then the OUTPUT from the Freeview into the INPUT of the DVD recorder. Then the OUTPUT from the DVD recorder to the Input of the TV. You should be able to watch the Freeview then, through the channel on the TV that you tune your DVD recorder into.

Any problems just ask again !!

wow thanks almcd007 I will try again tonight. it is set up using scart leads but maybe I can try and do it with aerial leads instead.

It is a Sony encee, but I have not found any help on the website.

Failing everything I will try and get a universal remote for my TV, that make is LG however, which I have not been able to find a compatible one for.
That's the problem then. The only way of seeing the DVD recorder's picture is throught the AV input.

You should be able to get a remote and it will solve your problem - best to keep it scart as the picture will be better.
Using a universal remote I would be very suprised If you cant get it to work with.I had something similar with a universal remote and phoned the company up who gave me a sequence so that it would work.Good luck I'm sure you will get there in the end.By the way make sure you get correct format of dvd's for your recorder cos it cost me a fortune on getting the wrong ones. But i got there in the end and all is hunky dory.
