I want to buy a digital radio for a Christmas gift. What should I be looking for and are they any good for someone who likes to try and pick up radio programmes from outside the normal range?

hi harvey,
it all depends what you want,
eg some digital radios are in mono ( only one speaker)
you can buy one one for about 40,
wich may be ok, if you are not to bothered
about sound quality.
but if you are willing to be a bit more extravagent for about 110, you can get one
of the "pure ( brand name ) models,
these are good value for money,
and you can hook them up to an amplifier
andget a superb sound through your
hi-fi, and of course lots more channels.
hope this helps.

Thanks very much for that - I will have a look around the shops and see what is on offer. I would rather pay more and get something of better quality.
I had a pure DAB bought for me, & I find it excellent. However, if the digital signal starts to become weak, you'll find it impossible to listen to. I've recently seen DAB/AM combi radios & they seem to be a better compromise.
I would also suggest that you go for a good quality model such as Pure or Roberts.
Forget it! Despite all the hype about DAB, and with the exception of only a very few stations, a good FM receiver will give you better sound quality than a digital radio.

Oh! Forgot to mention that a freeview box will beat DAB for quality broadcast sound on the radio channels. Not too portable though!
Havey. I should have said DAB/FM not AM. Heathfield I agree about the reception on DAB. However, you can't get radio's 6,7,oneword & a multitude of music stations on FM.And if you listen to radio 5 or world service the reception's crap on AM, especially at night.
