Coaxial connections

In my previous home there was a coaxial/fm socket in the wall so all i had to do was plug my coaxial cable from my t.v in and i had a perfect picture.
In my new place there is'nt such a socket, i know these can be bought chealply for about 2 pounds but how do you install them? And how do you connect it? Do i need to get an electrician to do it?

I am fed up with a crap picture on my t.v.

Is there an aerial coming into your house though ?

This plugged directly into the back of the tv should give you a decent picture. The socket just connects to the aerial wire and just looks neater when there is no tv there.

It's basically just a femal connector instead of the male connector on the normal aerial wire that would enter your house.

Thanks Bobster-cyw but i don't actually have that socket in the wall to connect the cable, i have the cable, that's not really what i was asking but thanks.

Do you have an ariel in the loft or on your roof? if not you will need one, when you buy the ariel get all the gear to wire it up, very easy to do!! you wont need an electrician.

I'm a bit confused.

The socket in your old house would have been connected, by coaxial cable, to an aerial (which was probably on the roof but might have been in the attic).

If your new home has got an aerial on the roof (or in the attic) with a lead feeding into your living room (or wherever else your TV is) then re-routing the cable via a wall socket won't improve the signal. (You could try a signal amplifier but it's usually best to get a better aerial).

If you've not got an aerial at all then, obviously, you need to get one fitted. Unless you've got access to ladders (and are happy working at heights) this isn't really a DIY job.

Whether you've already got an aerial or simply need to upgrade it, you'll probably be best advised to seek the services of a prodessional. Look under 'Aerial services & supplies' in Yellow Pages.

Sorry, i may be confusing you. The cable is one i had before, one of those white ones, i just used to connect that to my tv then to the 'hole' in the wall but in this place i don't have that coaxial socket.
I guess i will have to look around the fronrt room for some box on the wall and see if the antenna is connected there. I do have an aeriel on the roof.

The cable you've got isjust the 'fly lead'. The connection to the aerial isn't necessarily via a box on the wall. You might have an aerial cable entering the room through the ceiling or alongside a window.

hi stressed,
what these fellow abers are saying ( to put it simply )
is, if you have an ariel, then all you need to do is take the lead from the ariel ( making sure you have the correct end on the lead
i.e male / female ) and plug it into the back of your tele, you dont need a wall socket.

Behind the coaxial socket was the aerial cable.

All that socket does is tidy the cables up a bit, it does not improve the picture at all.
