In common with many thousands of others no doubt, today when I went to tax my car I couldn't find my insurance certificate. I rang the company who will be sending out a copy first class. What I need to know is, should I register the car as off the road, as if the certificate doesn't arrive tomorrow I'm worried they will 'fine' me? (Or is tomorrow even too late?) The car is kept on a driveway.

Having previously been fined 80 for not notifying a car off road (even though it had been scrapped by a garage) I am a bit wary of not doing anything.

Better to be safe than sorry, I have done a SORN declaration online.
If you had one of the new mot certificates you could have done it on line, without finding your documents. It was the easiest thing I`ve done and the tax disc came 3 days later.I dont think a couple of days will matter.

Not enough credit on my card! I know you should do this a few days before, but would would happen if the tax disc didn't arrive for a few days into the new month and you wanted to use the car, as the disc has to be displayed?
Don't worry they'll do nothing for at least 3 weeks so just tax it asap.
Officially I think they give you 7 days. Generally I think it's as loosehead said

Good job I did as the insurance certificate has not arrived in today's post. I will tax it as soon as it has arrived, just hope its straightforward, now I have done a SORN. Hope they can accept it at the Post Office.

Which brings up another point (off topic I know) but if we all used the online option, surely this would be another nail in the coffin of post offices, particularly in rural areas? After all just think how many people are queueing to tax their cars in front of you!
