If you have a timer on the oven make sure its not set to turn off as some ovens have timers which will count down the cooking time and then bleep till you press the button when the time is up or some will just cut the oven off when the time as run out.

Tell me more Billy and I will be your mate forever!!
Well if it's a brand new element and it was replaced correctly it can really only be the thermonstat that is at fault.

I haven't had an electric oven for years but they used to have a seperate thin tube inside the oven, to the rear. If this has failed it may well explain why the element is not heating.
I would say the thermostat as well. It regulates the temperature, so if you set it to 200 degrees, it will switch the element off when it reaches that temperature and back on again if the temperature dips too low below 200 degrees. If the thermostat is faulty, it can switch the element off at a very low temperature irrespective of the setting on the dial..
i had a similar prob recently and discovered that my oven has two elements that operate on different oven setings, just an idea to check if your oven also has different settings ie fan, regular, pizza, quick heat etc

Thank you everyone! ... and finally ... have decided to call in a man with tools! I will show him your responses!!
Hi Clemmie - my electric fan oven has a cut of switch which is activated when the oven door opens. Mine sometimes plays up and the oven switches off so I have to push he door a little to get the switch to activate again. You may have a similar problem or your switch may be completly broken hence the oven thinks the door is open when it isn't. There is a small amount of adjustment on the actuator on mine. Have a look on the iniside of the door and see if you can see a plunger actuator. If so make sure it is making contact with the switch. Hope this helps and you get it sorted. jay.

Thanks Jay - but my oven used to work with the door open or closed - but will take a look and follow your instructions anyway - repair man is coming tomorrow - will let all know what was causing the problem - just in case it helps anyone else!

Ok man with tools arrived - its the timer clock that's the problem! Buying a new one costs 171+! Does anyone think it wise to give up and just buy a new one?
Get a sparky in, like myself, to slightly rewire the timer so you don't have to have a timer then the oven will work just fine but if you want the oven to come on while your down the pub then tough s*** but it will save you 171+vat of course
