As a newly self employed plumber, how can I start contract work with new builds etc? Also, how can I start doing work for insurance companies?

I would suggest that it's the "Not what you know, but who you know" scenario. Get talking to other plumbers at the wholesalers when you are picking up your stuff. Hand out some cards and you may find that a plumbers mate is ill or holidaying and someone is needed to fill the gap. If they like your work, they'll come back for more.
