At the minute i have a contract with o2 which i have had for a few months, and bought through a mobile phone shop. I would like to get a similar but slightly different contract with o2 online (bought over the internet).

Would i be able to just cancel one contract and take another one out or would i still be charged for line rental on the original contract?

You would have to pay the remaining period of the contract, because thats what it is a contract. So lets say the monthly cost is 20 and you have 10 months left you would need to pay the remaining 200. Thats how these boys make money so its unlikely that you could change the contract.
You cannot change your contract until it has run the full 12 months. After this period, if you phone O2 they will give you numerous contract options. If you don't phone your contract will continue to run on a month-to-month basis.
I've posted this in your other posting but here it is again: I really wouldn't bother. I have an o2 online contract, 7 months into it and counting' come Xmas & I'm outta there! When you have a problem, not if, you are forced to call their premium help line, they charge you 50p per minute. You can't take your handset (I'm on my 5th) to an o2 shop, they wont touch an online purchase. Corresponding via email is a nightmare and takes ages. You send a message, wait a week, they reply, bog standard reply, you reply wait another week and so it goes on! Their website is atrocious Checking bills online is a minefield. There are plenty of other deals out there, with other providers. I'm putting this down to a year's experience never to be repeated.
