No evidence to back this up but my gut reaction would be coal - just did it up and burn it.
peat maybe? what else, amber..? nope, not much of that around; not oil anyway.

As Arthur Scargill once said 'We produce the cheapest deep mined coal in the world...blah de blah de blah'.Electricity would be much cheaper for us now if we wouldn't have closed all the coal mines!teehee
Peat is cheap and plentiful and easy to dig up.
