what is the name given to a crossbar in a horse's harness to which the ends of the side straps are attatched?

The metal piece that goes in the mouth? That's a bit.

And there is the brow band that goes across the front of the head, above the eyes, and the nose band which goes across the front of the nose.

not sure if it has anything to do with the mouth, unfortunately the question if have been set is as i posted.

I'd say it's more likely the single tree. The side straps are called traces... the single tree is then attached to a double tree which is attached to the machine being pulled.
