watch numbers

I've recently bought a watch which is the normal type with pointers instead of the digital type. Around the watchface there is a dial with the numbers 1-15. Each of the numbers have a dot between them as if to separate the numbers into 1, 11/2, 2, 21/2 and so on.

My question is this; is this supposed to be for some purpose, or has the watch designer just decided it would look good?

Is it supposed to be a sort of imitation bezel maybe? Or is it even a real bezel? (Bit hard without a picture). If it doesn't move then I woudl guess it is purley there to look cool, if it does move, then my best guess would be it's supposed to be used for timing surfing. I say this as I have two watches with bezels, one for diving (which has an hour bezel) and one (that I never use) which is seemingly for surfing - and that's got the first 15 mins broken down in a simlar way.

Hi! A watch that is the 'normal type with pointers' is called an "analog" watch. In Britain it might be spelled "analogue". Analog[ue] is the opposite term from digital... just in case you are ever quizzed on this!

P.S. Actually, any clock that is 'the normal type with pointers' is called an analog clock, as opposed to digital.

Sounds like a Bezel - the idea is that you line up the dial with the minute hand of your watch. So on my diving watch, when i go under the water I line up the "0" with the minute hand, let's say it is on 40 mins past the hour. When i come up then I read the minute hand in relation to the bezel not the clock face, so if I was under the water for half an hour it would be pointing at 30 on the bezel but on the watch face it would be telling me 10 mins past the hour. I am sure yours is used in surfing.There is a reason for teh time delination - something about the trial times...? I'll check over the weekend as I know it is mentioned in the instructions woth my surf watch. have a good one. F.
