I used this a bit as a kid to try and convince my friends that i'd seen a ghost by taking a picture of a darkish corridor in my house then (without moving the camera at all) dressing up scary like and taking a picture of myself walking down the corridor. The result with the double exposure was a see through image a me walking down the corridor ... woooo scary
Many manual 35mm cameras have a rewind button that you depress when you wish to rewind a film when you have taken all of your pictures (manual not motorised rewind). If you were to take a picture ( say of the empty corridor mentioned by IggyB), you can then press the rewind button in and then use the wind on lever, this resets the shutter for another exposure but the film DOES NOT MOVE ON. If you now dress as a ghost (as Iggy's example) and take a photo of yourself this ghost image will be overlayed onto the first image of the corridor. In this case there are two images on one frame of film. You can do multiple images on one frame, but this can get quite complex working out the correct exposure times so that everything isn't too dark or too light in the finished article.
