Its a disease that is carried by and transfered by water. So if you went swimming in a lake which contained a water borne disease then you could catch it. Colds for example are air borne in that they are carried in the air.

Waterborne diseases are pathogenic micro-organisms which are directly transmitted when contaminated drinking water is consumed. It can be caused by protozoa, viruses, bacteria, and intestinal parasites intestinal parasites.
