but when it comes to doing timsing it to a decimal im lost ?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The way I think about this is that you have to remove the decimal point , do the multiplication and then put it back in the right place in the answer.
So in your example
240 x 1.20
well that's the same as 240 x 1.2 isn't it because that 0 at the end isn't doing anything
well
240 x 1.2
Imagine it's 240 x 12 that's
240X10 = 2400
plus 240X2 = 480
-----------------------
2880
but we didn't want x12 we wanted x1.2 we made it 10 times bigger so now we make the answer 10 times smaller
2880 divided by 10 is 288
which is your answer
Think of it as "borrowing moves of the decimal place" and paying them back at the end
