I saw a movie about 10years ago with a storyline of a thrifty/miserly family. They wife was absolutely obsessed with not spending money and saving money... anyway the wife had one of these "pedometeres" strapped to her thigh with a garter when the hubbie was thrusting away. He had to pay her a certain amount per "Jolt" as shown on the pedometer. BTW it was a comedy.
As classy has already mentioned, before you start you imput your stride length for a particular activity (walking or running) as these vary. I think they work on a mercury switch which, when the "jolt" (as bluedolphin has christened it) occurs, the mercury completes a circuit which will then add to the step count.
