How easy and effective is it to straighten a front sprocket please? (someone offered us kids bike cheap but with said problem)

Well it can be done if approaced in the right way, it isnt any good thinking you can swing at it with a hammer, the sprocket needs to come off and be straightened in a vice!!
Depending on what sort of groupset you've got (that's techspeak for what sort of sprocket it is) it will probably be easier to replace the sprocket (around �8) if that's not feasible you could replace the whole assembly, that may not be practical and the bike might be scrap. Take it to a bike shop and ask their advice. Advice is usually free! Take it from there. It's not always practical to straighten sprockets and if you do you'll get thro chains like they're going out of fashion.........
I suspect buying the bike will be false economy.
I would ask the cost as Davec886 has suggested and compare the overall cost of purchase and repair with the cost of a new bike.
