The term inertia is used to describe the tendency of a body to resist any change to its velocity.
My dictionary defines it concisely as, "the property of matter by which it will remain at rest, or in uniform motion in the same straight line or direction unless acted upon by some external force." It can also be an attitude, such as my not getting around to answering this question for a week.
Inertia in a strict mechanical sense is related to the rotational momentum of a body, as opposed to its linear momentum.
