How do I safely remove a security tag without ripping the garment? No, i am not a thief, the shop left it on and it is a long way back!

You would be best to take it back to the shop as they are not easy to remove. The tag may also contain dye which, if the tag is not removed properly will squirt coloured dye all over you and the garment.
In my experience, any shop will take it off for you if you can product a receipt
Shops use different tagging systems so you may have to take it back to the shop you bought it from. This is the only option if you don't want to risk damaging the item I'm afraid - if you call them and make a big fuss they may come out to you with a detagger and do it for you at home - the company I work for does, but only if a customer really kicks off.
The shops all seem to use a magnet of some kind to get the tag off, but it depends on the tag. Some are just a little level that pokes into the unit and it releases the clip.

If its one with the ink cartridge then forget it lol its not worth messing it up
So how did you get out of the shop then? Are you a sprinter?
i find the shops dont bother when the tags set the alarms off. When it happened to me, I left the shop, set the alarms off, went into another shop, set the alarms off, left the second shop, set the alarms off.

At this point I realised it was me (the shops were busy and i didnt realise it was me until them), checked for a tag, and went into another shop to ask them to remove the tag (again setting off the alarms)

Not once did anyone come near me, shop assistants just ignore the alarms
two options really.

1. a trip back to the shops where you bought it OR

2. a trip to the local knacker estate... they will probably remove in 15 milliseconds (usually using their teeth.
Apparently if you freeze the item if its a dye tag the dye then freezes so you could then try with a powerful magnet to get it off.

Not sure how true this is but someone I know who works in a well known dept store told me thats how the shoplifters do it.
When exactly did you notice it??
