I read somwhere that the original Aviators were designed with a circle in the bridge to hold a pilot's cigarette. I DEFINITELY read this cos my girlfriend remembers me reading it to her! But I can't for the life of me find any reference to this anywhere!!!
Can anyone verify this, or even better post a link to an online reference?
Thanks!

Well the pic on here goes back to 1942 and they are the same then!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviator_sunglasse s
I would imagine that a cigarette would fit between the two bars in the middle but I cant imagine them being designed with a cigarette holder between your eyes, especially for pilots, that doesn't make a lot of sense!! I don't imagine pilots being allowed to smoke in the cockpit anyway, can you imagine all that smoke that would go in your eyes with a cigarette there.

I may be wrong but it doesn't sound very likely!!
I think DiscoStu means this style.

If you scroll down to 'RayBan', there's a single reference to the 'cigarette holder' here.

But, thinking about it, what other shape would you use to join the lens frames to the sweat bar and so strengthen the glasses? I'd put it down to 'Urban Myth'!
I agree heathfield!!
