well the best way is to get as much of the diesel out of the tank, syphon it out of the filler pipe, then fill it up with petrol and you should be fine, but top it up every day for a week or so.if you take it to a garage, they will charge you quite a bit for doing it.
Oop Norm! Its a diesel.
A quarter tank of petrol is too much for safety. Siphon most of it out (disposal is then a problem, take it to your waste disposal centre and put it into the waste oil tank). Fill up with diesel. The small amount of petrol remaining in your tank won't be a problem.
panic
did you run the car, or did you notice befor you started it? if you didnt run it then its fine to empty the tank, if you ran the car you should flush the pipes and get a new fule filter.
Without wishing to alarm you too much I did the same a few years ago and it cost me 400. I filled the tank with petrol in a diesel car, realised before turning the ignition so it didn't get pumped through the engine but the AA still took ithe car away and washed out the tank. I think I was absolutely done actually as loads of people told me afterwards that they could have siphoned it out as a little bit of petrol isn't going to do much harm to a robust diesel engine. What really galled me as well was paying 50 for a tank of fuel I never used!
