I've seen safety deposit boxes on American films, but are there any banks or companies that provide them in the UK ? I have lots of stuff I'd like to store safely in somewhere like that incase of fire, theft and so on.

I believe most of the High Street banks will still provide this service on request. Unlike Hollywood movies, most people use them to store simply the deeds to their house, rather than several million pounds worth of jewels, or guns, or wads of banknotes or the proceeeds from fraud, etc..!! And in my childish naivety years ago, I used to imagine that this service would naturally be free to legitimate existing customers, but alas, it turned out to be extremely expensive, and charged by the week, rather than the year... Another illusion shattered..!!
Depends where you are as I can only speak for London, but there is a place on the Finchley Road (North London) which is exactly like one from the films with just a counter and rows of boxes and you can have 24 hour access. Wouldn't have a clue on costs but that one's probably expensive as its near Hampstead!! :)
There's a big one under Park Lane too :-) aah, if only everything were like the films.
Why not buy a subfloor fireproof box that you can easily access yourself? It can be put anywhere under the groundfloor (or basement if your lucky to have one) and concealed beneath normal flooring. THis is an example of what I mean. http://www.saundersonsecurity.co.uk/catdoccab.shtm
