Does anybody know how much I am likely to be charged to buy goods from the USA (approximate value of the item 300) and shipped to this country (uk)? What other charges might I face? (VAT etc?)

It's not a guitar is it?

There have been a couple of questions just like this asked about guitars recently....here's the link to one http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/DisplayAnswers.go?q

Thanks for that (although the link does not want to work for me) I'm fairly certain I did a search however nothing came up that was relevant in the 'How things work' section Sorry!
This is a site which is essentially the UK customs page: http://www.sloanefox.freeserve.co.uk/importukduty.

You pay import duty (between 5 and 9%) on the cost of the product plus shipping and VAT (at 17.5%) on top of that! So for a 300 product with 15 packing would cost approximately 388 (17.5% x (5% x 315))
