Wind Farms / Wind Turbines. Any problems?
22 Answers
Seven of the UK's biggest land-based wind turbines (125 metres) are proposed to be erected within 1000 metres of our house. Restricting the answers to those who have ACTUAL and personal experience of living near these things, could readers please give details of any health and quality of life issues about which I should be concerned?

Im beiginning to wish that swaffham had refused the first one but our breckloand council always dumps things on us that they dont want in dereham (travellers sites, wind turbines)
i have just done a quick search on google and found that they are trying to get 20 in swaffham now and there a nice quote http://www.wattonandswaffhamtimes.co.uk/conten t/wstimes/news/story.aspx?brand=WSOnline&categ ory=news&tBrand=WSOnline&tCategory=news&itemid =NOED13%20Jun%202007%2008%3A43%3A08%3A613
'But agent for the development, Cetis, said that Swaffham's concentration of existing turbines meant it was a logical choice over areas untouched by windfarms.'
Well if thats not an argument for refusing the wind turbines I cant see what is. Once you accept one youll be the dumping ground for more. I cant see why they cant put the appropriate number that are required to power that area. Once thats reached then why should we blight our landscape to power norwich or dereham?

Hi redcrx, Cor that's awful & they deserve a big kick! I have been to the ecotech - very interesting but very biased I thought , because I now know that output for land based turbines can be as low as 7% capacity, compared with 30%+ for those sited at sea. They should balance the small gains against the damage to the quality of life in areas where they site them! The big problem is that the government has decided that on-shore turbines don't produce as much energy as was thought and so subsidies stop from 2010. After that, most turbines will either be in the high wind areas (like Scotland) or at sea! Good ! But there'll be a mass of applications to site on land before that deadline so the developers can get the big payments before they dry up! Politics (spit!).
Did you know also that not one power station will close as a result of wind power because it is unreliable - the most it does is help during low power periods. In Denmark they've changed their minds about wind power, once they found it was needed IN ADDITION to traditional power stations! Problem is it's about big money, not power or environment!
