...to post this but probably the most appropriate. Many years ago, Tomorrow's World (BBC TV) featured a new process which was said to make it possible for anyone to chrome or gold plate things using a kit (chrome, gold, silver, etc.) which in essence was a gel that you applied to the surface to be given the shine. Does anyone know what became of that idea ? If it is still around and kits are available then I would like to source one.

Don't remember the gel, but if you type 'chroming kit' into Google, you might see a satisfactory alternative.
I think you'll be looking for an electroplating kit, if that helps

Thanks guys. Heathfield, At first glance all I get are references to electroplating - this is not what I saw on TV - see below. Whickerman, no, that is exactly the point, what was demonstrated was swabbed onto the surface (any non-absorbent material, as I remember it). Electroplating is the standard (including industrial) method and not the least bit exceptional or difficult to understand - you just need the bath and electodes, etc. but not something you contemplate as a one-off or just out of curiosity.
I have seen a similar product advertised recently as a franchise opportunity. It was a US-published "start your own business" mag (sorry can't remember the title), but I bought it in WH Smith (there are quite a few of the genre on the shelves). Maybe take a flick thru some of those?
