My new datasafe has an odd looking key to unlock it. Instead of the normal bumps and ridges it had a flat blade with pits drilled in each side. Can anyone explain how it works?

They are very secure things.... making it very difficult to pick or copy....
its all about little pieces of metal inside the lock sinking into the little pits so that their other ends form a straight line if you insert the right key. and if this straight line is exactly at the radius of the turning core of the lock you can turn the key. otherwise the little metal pieces protruding from the core block the rotation.
