Skipping answering machine messages

Yep, when you phone up somebody and their answering machine message comes on and it lasts for ages. It annoys me. I found that this technique allows you to skip the message and leave your own in less than 3 seconds!
When the recorded messsage comes on press * twice. You'll hear the beep and be able to leave your message.
Please try out this technique, i want to be sure it works not only on my answering machine before i distribute the technique to some other people at my club.

I tried it and it asked for a security code rather than prompting me to leave a message, so I don't think it's a universal thing.

i think that you have found, inadvertantly, the way to access your own messages from another phone, ring yourself and enter your 4 digit code that you probably don't know what it is.... then you can listen to your own messages left for you.
