Quite often the dialogue on my TV is drowned out by the incessant and usually unnecessary background music.

Has anyone got any tips on which controls / settings I need to adjust to try and combat this problem?

There's nothing you yourself can do about it. The speech and music are all one audio signal.

I've complained to the BBC before now about their incessant drumming noise in the background while the newsreader is announcing the headlines, but they still do it. I know their reasoning is to try to add a touch of drama to possibly dull and boring news, but it sure gets on my wick!

An on-air discussion about this blamed young producers. In particular, they seem to have an especial horror of on-air silence, and insist of filling the void with (sometimes not so background) music, helping destroy otherwise enjoyable programmes.

Aaargh! :-(

I find it annoying when the adverts suddenly boom out at a much louder rate than the programme. It's extremely annoying.
Does your TV have different audio setting - ie, music, film, speech. If so may altering this might help.

Thanks all - I will investigate audio settings
If you have nicam stereo or dolby this is usually what causes there to be more background noises. My Mum and Dad had to turn theirs off because they couldn't here what anyone was saying.
