how do i transfer music from a cd in my pc ( 5 yrs old ) to an mp3 player.have windows98 and a usb port but don't know what to do now

You should have had a software CD with the mp3 player that will convert tracks from WMA to mp3 format. Mine is Musicmatch but there are loads. If your mp3 player is second hand just type in 'mp3 convertor' into Google and there are quite a few good ones that you can download and try free for 14 days.
the best cd ripper out there is called exact audio copy. It's free and if it isn't sure about a bit on the cd it will re-read that section until it is fairly sure what it should be. http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ to enable converting it to mp3 download and extract lame into the eac directory, get it here http://mitiok.free.fr/lame-3.96.zip
