Wiring to a type of street lamp standard

Can anyone tell me where I can see a wiring diagram to suit these items controlling a sodium bulb on a street lamp.

live to ballast then to igniter
igniter to lamp
neutral to both igniter and lamp
power factor capacitor across supply (L & N)
or sometimes if its a three terminal ballast

and there are other ways
but have a look at the ballast as the wiring diagram is usually printed on it

Hi matt1E, thanks for your reply. There is nothing sinister in this, we are 16 houses in a small estate and are responsible for 4 street lamps and 2 pend lights. Through the 11 years we have changed the occasional bulb but this time it did not work. We then changed the Ballast, Cap., and Igniter, changing conn.for conn., but no reaction!
Ours is as your 3 terminal guide with the Ballast having four terminals and using only the three.
Thanks for your time on this, but all is as you say, will prob. have to bring in the Council man as do not know any other street lighting person.

have you checked the photo cell on the top?
also high pressure sodium are very "fussy" about starting when there are corroded or bad connections so remake the ends and especially check the centre pin on the lamp holder it may need pulling up a bit but make sure the power is of and the capacitor is either discharged or disconnected while you do this

also on thinking make sure you have not bought a lamp with a internal igniter as this will not work and will probably damage the ballast. Its easy to tell ,if you look at the lamp there will be a symbol on it that looks like a triangle it will either have an E or a I in the middle you need to have an E for external igniter

matt1e, the switching is done by a light sensor, remote from the lights and controls all. The Triangle has an E on the lamps. Your point re the centre pin is a good one and after making sure re capacitor I will check this. Poss tomorrow as we are getting high winds here and it's not the best for up a scaffold. Will let you know re outcome.

matt1e, just to let you know I got the expert in to check out the controls we fitted. He said that the igniter I was given to replace existing was not suitable for the purpose, the correct one was obtained and worked no bother. so you were right in your assumption that igniter could be wrong - but the triangle was correct - it was the duty of it that was wrong.
