Problem with van electrics

I have just bought a VW transporter, whenever the engine is turned off. the clock stops and the odometer (that reads the journey length) always resets. Also, i have tried to fit in a radio and am having trouble with the power. Could the 2 be related? (someone has suggested a lack of current). please help

I have no direct knowledge of any VWs, but this sounds as though someone's done some knitting with the wires in the fuse box. I assume you can start the engine, so the battery's OK. The clock (if electric!) should be powered when everything's switched off, but seems to be connected to a supply that stops when the ignition is switched off.
If bits that should be permanently live aren't, then you will have problems making sense of things. Hope my suggestion helps.

I was going to say the same as Ewood27, there should be a circuit that stays "live" when the ignition is turned off.. if you have a handbook telling you what fuses are what you should have some idea. I believe the clock, cigarette lighter, courtesy lights, etc should all be workable when the ignition is turned off.
