One of the items that Im selling on ebay has been "purchased" by a member from POLAND with 0 feedback. At first he said he would send payment by post, now he is asking for my bank account details to put the money in.
Is it possible for this person to clean out my bank account just by knowing what its number and sort code is? Should I contact ebay?

WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT BY ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE YOUR SORT CODE OR BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS
They certainly could wipe your account out - hope you still haven't

Definitely don't give out any bank details and yes, I would contact Ebay.
I'm not sure, but if it was me, I would be very worried and contact ebay. It just strikes me as odd that he is changing payment methods. I would contact ebay, and see what they say. Good luck. Daffi x
On ebay i use paypal only

no substitutes
ask him to send payment by post (recorded or registered). make up an excuse that you are having trouble with your bank.tell him your in the process of changing banks or something similar.
This is off the Ebay site itself

Beware of fake email and websites requesting sensitive information.

A major threat to the security of your eBay account is impostor email and associated Web sites, called spoof email and spoof Web sites. Both are used to get personal and account information.

Any email that looks as if it is from eBay that mentions a problem with your account or requests personal information and it is not in My Messages in My eBay, is a fake email.

We will never ask you to provide sign-in passwords, credit card numbers, or other confidential information through email. If eBay requests information, eBay always directs you back to the eBay site.

You give out your bank account number and sorting code to everybody you send a cheque to, because it is all pre-printed on the cheque.

And, you also give them a copy of your signature.

If it is so dangerous to give out these details why do banks print this information on your cheques?????

Paranoia rules, OK!

LOL

Thanks for all your answers. I havent given my bank details out and I wont. I will request paypal payment or for it to be posted to me securely, otherwise the sale will be cancelled.
What I dont get is, how can someone trake your money just by having your account number and sort code?
Hi, Do not give your bank details to anyone. This seems to me to be a scam. Inform E-bay and they will take appropriate action. Regards, John.
if the person can suddenly pay by paypal keep hold of the item for around 3 days before posting,
Why don't you get them you pay you with Paypal? The scammer's friend when it comes to paying for things.

Then they can get their money back once they have got the item if they want to - by just making a claim for an item not received. You could not stop them doing that if they are in Poland because you could not prove delivery to them via online tracking.

Might as well take their money and not post them anything then LOL
i dont allow people with 0 feedback to bid on my items lol

Yep he must be a fraudster. Now he is asking to pay in western union. As if! LOL
its true about paypal, happened to me sold an ipod got paid thru paypal posted it and had proof of delivery, a month later the guy puts an undelivered item claim in and paypal refunded him even although i had proof he got it
Question Author
So basically paypal offers no protection at all. What a joke.
If he is offering to pay with Western Union then accept it. You get cash in your hand - no chance of losing the money.

Western Union is only unsafe for a buyer - exactly because the seller gets cash in hand and there is nothing the buyer can do if they don't get their item.

But for a seller it's a great way to be paid. No risk of losing the money later and no fees to pay to get it.

And don't say that ebay don't allow Western Union payments. bay don't allow a seller to ask for a WU payment. They don't say you can't accept one if the buyer offers it.
Question Author
In the same way, if a buyer sends me a postal order and I cash it in and then dont send the their goods, they're screwed. Paypal and cheque offer limited protection.
