I've never had one. I want a pay as you go deal but I don't know how you pay for use. I understand you go to a local shop and ask for a top up? What do do ask for exactly?
There's a bewildering rang of phones available what do I ask for, is it specific?

You buy a phone which will be on a particular network - Vodafone, Orange, O2 etc

Some will come with a swipe card - go to the shop, hand your card over and say '10 top up please'. Credit is applied to your phone automatically.

Some won't have a swipe card - go to the shop and say '10 vodafone top-up voucher please'. Follow the instructions on the voucher.
I top up mine on line - easy to do, and very convenient.

If I'm away from home I use the swipe card in newsagents and so on.

I bank at NatWest and can top up mobile phones using the hole in the wall. I think other banks may also offer this service. When don't you check what services are offered next time you use your banks cash machine.
Most companies will let you top up your account on line.

I am with T-Mobile. If I dial '150', an automated recording will tell me how much credit I have left, and i can top up by following the simple instructions. I jad to register my debit card, but that's a one-off action - after that it's simple.

Good luck.
I top mine up by phone. It's free to call, I register my debit card number with them once, from then on it's dead fast and easy.
Buy a phone on ebay. Second hand. So so so cheap now. Soooooooooooooo cheap.
Like: a good phone with all the bells and whistles, delivered for under a tenner.
Get one that's unlocked to any network.
Never pay for a sim card. Various online service providers send them out free. Some shop asked me for a fiver for a blank Orange Sim card. Are you having a laugh?
virgin mobile have some good deals.
I used to use O2 PAYG but I found it very expensive.

Now I use Tesco, and they are much cheaper. Also their charging system is very simple - same charge whether you call landline or mobile any time of the day.
