The water is being heated by the engines operation. The hot water is not getting to the heating coil, either an air lock is blocking the flow,or more likely the radiator solenoid is locked closed. The hot water is not circulating to the heater. A good indication is now quiclky the temperature gauge rises.
Have you checked the level of the water and oil? I never give them a thought until the heater stops working.
Another thing it could be is the thermostat has broken. Usually they stick in the open position so the water is not reaching the correct temperature.
This can happen if the head gasket has blown
First thing I'd check (apart from the water) is the thermostat.. get a new one, they don't cost a lot
