how long do you have to notify DVLA of change of address or ownership of a vehicle? what if u forget to notify them what can happen? if you have a parking ticket and you did not know about it because it is going to the wrong address what can be done what does the law say about this? how can you incur costs if you have no knowlege about them in the first place???

The onus is on you to notify the dvla immediately of change of ownership.As you have found out it is your interest.If you can prove to them the vehicle has changed hands they usually look on it sympathetically.Good luck.

Would the parking ticket not have been affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle. I know they use super sticky covers now that take some getting off so surely that would make the owner aware they had a ticket pending?? Just a thought!

The dvla laws changed not too long ago (many adverts were on tv, etc). If you sell a car and don't declare the new owner you are breaking the law and are still liable for parking fines and the road tax. What you can do is notify dvla that you sold the car (if that is the case) and tell them when. You can tell them you did send the V5 registration document to them (lots of mail gets lost in the post). If they ask who you sold it to and you don't have the info, tell them that you wrote it on the V5 that you sent back to them and didnt keep any other record.
