Antoniabeam... you need to answer a few questions first !
1. What make and model of machine do you have ?
2. Is it an electric or a hand operated sewing machine ?
3. What sort of bobbin is it - shuttle shaped or circular ?
On the wheel of the machine, there will be an inner wheel which you need to turn anti-clockwise, to disengage the needle mechanism. You need to wind (clockwise) some thread onto the bobbin, fit it onto its receiver (this is why we need the model etc) and either turn the main handle or start the motor using the footpedal. This should get the thread winding onto the bobbin instead of going through the stitching mechanism. When you have wound enough thread onto the bobbin, break the thread and re-engage the mechanism by turning the inner wheel clockwise. Test that the needle moves up and down by turning the main outer wheel slowly.
Do you need to know how to put the bobbin into its case ?
